HD 201 Lightweight Over Ear Headphones review:
Sennheiser is a fairly respected name among audiophiles, but I do not consider myself an audiophile, nor will I try to speak as one. Now, this is one of the cheapest pairs of headphones that Sennheiser has to offer, but don't let that fool you: these headphones are a moderate force to be considered reasonably. I am a gamer and an at-home music producer of my own music, so I actually use them quite a bit.
I had a pair of beats - they were ok, good sound but not the best. The right channel finally gave up the ghost. Looked into a "cheaper" pair of headphones. Looked at all the reviews as I always do. Decided on these Sennheisers. Wanted something that would fit OVER the ears - the beats started to hurt my ears after about 30 minutes, felt like your ears were pinned back!
I've had these for about 5 months now and I am continually happy with the purchase. For the money, these are the best headphones I have had. Pros:
- They are super comfy and are not too heavy. I've worn them for hours while working without any irritation.
- The 'leather(?)' on the head and sides is soft and easy on my skin. I've had other headphones with cheaper pleather sides that were irritating to wear.
- The sound does not leak too badly out the side if they are on your head. (As opposed to them laying on the table where you can definately hear them on.)
- The sound quality is very very good and beats the similar Sony headphones i had before.
- The volume output is pretty good for an over the ear headphone. I've had no issue getting them to a good
I bought these back in November, and at the time I read some reviews that seemed to suggest that these were "too bassy", and of course there were others that said these were garbage, but most were positive, so I decided to buy them. Kind of a disappointment. My opinion is that they sound ok, nothing thats going to blow your socks off or anything like that, but they're decent. The bass is a bit lacking, I think the pair of Sonys I have produce more bass, I'm not saying that these are horrible. They do produce good highs, and mids, which seems to make the sound seem wider, and it could be argued that they sound clear. The lack of bass just seems to make them sound a bit artificial to me, but the fact that they were cheap is a plus, but I don't use them as often as i thought I would. These headphones are kinda ugly too, and the cord is very long, when I do use them I have to coil the cord, otherwise I end up stepping on it, or snagging it on random furniture around the house.
I've had these for over 5 years and they're still going strong. I am a woman with a medium-sized head, and I use the headphones plugged into my computer, which is in a busy office. They're comfortable, I can hear the music I stream clearly, and when someone approaches me and begins talking, I can't hear them until I take the headphones off. I haven't noticed any distorted sound, and the volume plays evenly through both sides. The long cord is nice because I can move around my cubicle without having to take the headphones off. I think these are an excellent value. Maybe not A+ in terms of what audiophiles seek, but for the average office worker, these are aces.
Your purchase will always come down to what is the best headphone available in the price range that you have set. First of all, I didn't t want to spend a lot of money on headphones, so I was surprised that Sennheiser even offered something in this price range. The sound was nice and detailed. Highs were present but not harsh. The Lows we're detailed but not boomy or mushy. As with any economically priced item, compromises are made. I found that the cushioning of the ear cups are on the firmer side. I found myself repositioning the fit a couple of times while watching a movie. Also, the noise created when you adjust the fit of the ear cups is quite noticeable. Obviously, a pair of high end earphones will not have these shortcomings and will cost quite a bit more.
I haven't had a set of over the ear headphones in a while and I wanted to get some for the ease of putting them on/off. For the price I can't complain about these very much. Their low end bass is almost non-existent and the mids are a little tiring, so you definitely need to do some EQ work with these to balance them out a bit. They're very lightweight, which is good for long term comfort. The only complaint I have about them is my ears press on the inside of the cups a bit and I think that'll cause discomfort after a while, but otherwise they fit over my ears and the head fit and form is about perfect. Not too tight, not so lose I can't lean over and pick something up and they fall off. I like that the ear cups will rotate a little to accommodate different angles in heads etc, that's a nice touch for this level of headphones. The cords and connections seem secure enough, and the cable is quite long which is nice for some things, other things you might want to tie it up a bit and tuck it in a pocket or such.
I bought these to replace another over-ear set that had worn out at the wire (and were a bargain price). These are not nearly as good about the bass in the music I listen to (pop, classical, EDM, swing), but they DO make it easier to drown out the noise of my ill-tempered coworker and his muttered rants, which was what I bought them for in the first place. (Thank goodness for Amazon Prime's quick shipping!!) The ear cups are oblong, so I can wear them for a long period of time without any pain from pressure on the curve of the ear (small round ear cups, I'm looking at you!) and the cups are set up so that they can tilt about 10-15 degrees from parallel on the band, also reducing pressure on tender cartilage. The headband itself is adjustable and holds the adjustment well once set. The cord is quite long - I still have half of it looped up and held with a twist-tie, but I'm using these plugged directly into my work computer, which sits on top of my desk. Three star sound, five star comfort.
These are not the best headphones, but for under $30 your actually getting a lot. Although they may not block out other sounds, the sound quality coming from the headphones isn't bad. They feel a little light weight and cheap, but again as I told you before, these are only 25$. The cushioning on the headphones are great as well. I can wear them for a long time and not feel any kind of discomfort. I will give you one tip with these headphones, if you get them: Leave the cable tie on. The cable tie, ties up all the cables so they don't go all over the place, so you don't need to stuff the extra cable in your pocket. Once you take it off the cable is super long, so I suggest keeping that cable tie on as much as possible. Besides the small cons, this is a great pair of headphones!
